Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical effect of Yinhuang Liyan Decoction on chemoradiotherapy related oral mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods A total of 112 patients received chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Hu′nan Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from June 2016 to January 2018 were selected. According to the random number table method, the patients were divided into intervention group and control group, with 56 patients in each group. Both groups were treated with cisplatin chemotherapy and concurrent intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). The two groups received basic oral care during chemotherapy. The intervention group also took Yinhuang Liyan Decoction at the same time. The incidence of oral mucositis was compared between the two groups. Oral assessment scale (OAG) scores at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and the end of chemoradiotherapy; serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before and after chemoradiotherapy. Results The conditions of oral mucositis in the intervention group was significantly better than that in the control group (P < 0.05); there was no significant difference in the levels of OAG score, serum SOD, MDA, IL-6 and TNF-alpha between the two groups before chemoradiotherapy (P > 0.05). The OAG score of the two groups was significantly higher than that before chemoradiotherapy after 2 weeks, 4 weeks and at the end of chemoradiotherapy (P < 0.05), the OAG score of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). At the end of chemoradiotherapy the levels of SOD, IL-6 and TNF-α in the two groups were lower than those before chemoradiotherapy (all P < 0.05), the level of MDA was higher than that before chemoradiotherapy; while the levels of MDA, IL-6 and TNF-α were lower than control group, the level of SOD in the intervention group was higher than control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Yinhuang Liyan Decoction has a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis during chemoradiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which is beneficial to reduce the degree of inflammatory reaction caused by chemoradiotherapy and can improve the level of antioxidant index.
